Elegia tectorum (syn Chondropetalum tectorum)
Thatching Reed

From the family of plants commonly referred to as ‘Restios’ this evergreen grass-like plant originates from South Africa where it was used as a roofing material hence its common name Thatching Reed. Striking architectural foliage that naturally shed sheaths leaving small distinct rings at the nodes give a stripey appearance. Long lasting and attractive seed heads are produced in clusters in the Autumn.

Restios make an excellent feature plants or focal points when planted in the ground or in pots. Alternatively, they can be plant singly or groups in borders. The foliage and flower heads can be cut for flower arranging. Grow in well drained but moisture retentive acidic soil in full sun or light shade. Once established they are drought tolerant. Restios do not run or self-seed like many bamboos and grasses.

Native to South Africa
